A beautiful apartment overlooking Church Bay in the centre of Aberdyfi / Aberdovey

This pet-friendly self-catering apartment overlooks Church Bay in Aberdovey / Aberdyfi where the local fishing boats are moored. With its stunning views over the Dovey Estuary and the Plynlimon mountain range beyond, this apartment is in an ideal location to sit and watch the world go by whatever the weather!

A superb beachside location, with the sea only a stone’s throw away.  In the early morning, you can watch the sunrise over the Plynlimon mountain range shimmering off the beautiful Dovey estuary. Miles of sandy beaches are only a minute walk away, with all local amenities within easy reach.

Further afield you can explore the Ynys-Hir RSPB Reserve which is a wildlife haven in the heart of Wales, made famous by the BBC Spring Watch programme, The Dyfi Osprey Project (please follow the link to watch live:, The Ceredigion Heritage Coast along Cardigan Bay, the Caber Idris mountain range and not forgetting the lakes, small towns and villages, picturesque resorts and harbours.

The apartment is named after The Bear of Amsterdam, a 120-ton Spanish galleon that had escaped Drake’s fleet. The Bear of Amsterdam had staggered up the North Sea and around Scotland through the Irish sea and found safety anchored mid-river in front of where the apartment is now located.  The militia of Merionethshire and Cardiganshire assembled and waited for the opportunity to take or destroy the Spanish vessel. There were no boats available and certainly no cannons to hole her.  So there she swung at anchor with the forces of two countries helplessly standing by, unable to do more than fire the odd musket shot.

With the prevailing winds on this coast being Westerly it was difficult for the galleon to leave the estuary, but after several days of waiting and watching the winds changed and the Spanish ship was able to sail away over the bar and into open sea, where one of Drake’s ships was waiting to pounce and capture her.
