Courtney 17 November 2021

Your four-legged best friend is part of the family, you do everything together. Therefore, you don’t want to have to take him home when you need to refuel in the middle of the day. And looking at those puppy dog eyes as you close the door behind you and head out for an evening meal could break hearts. Luckily, Aberdyfi/Aberdovey has some great options for dining out with your pooch. No dog gets left behind when holidaying in this picturesque part of Mid Wales.

The Penhelig Arms Hotel, Aberdyfi, Wales

Eat nachos at the Penhelig Arms Hotel

The Penhelig Arms Hotel in Aberdyfi (also known as Aberdovey) is located overlooking the majestic Dyfi Estuary and is surrounded by the breathtaking Snowdonia National Park. The hotel overlooks the old Aberdyfi Elizabethan shipbuilding yard where, in past times, many of the local ships were built that sent slate and copper to all parts of the world. The Penhelig Arms is a 17th-century building that features a comfortable and stylish dining room, with fabulous sea views of the Dyfi Estuary. Originally a terrace of fisherman and shipbuilders’ cottages, the main building still retains a variety of rooms with a distinctive character.

The interior decor of the building still incorporates both old and new, with shaded hints of seaside blues and greens throughout, in keeping with the seaside location. Having been awarded an AA Rosette, the hotel’s celebrated restaurant offers fantastic, locally sourced dishes, specialising in fresh fish. Close by is the heart of the village and Aberdyfi’s award-winning sandy beach, which is just a short walk away.

The Penhelig Arms takes full advantage of its fabulous waterfront location where guests can sit outside and admire the views across the Dyfi Estuary to the mountain of Plynlimon beyond. The philosophy of the hotel is that the quality of the food should be something special, prepared with passion and pride, served in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Canine companions are heartily welcomed into the bar and lounge area where the menu on offer is the same as the restaurant.

The hotel is located in the heart of the village and is a popular public house where the locals meet up, visitors and tourists sit in the sunshine and enjoy the views over the local harbour, and families come for their daily meals and every Sunday afternoon, a delicious roast dinner.

This traditional pub has, in the past few years, been modernised with a sympathetic design that has maintained its character and charm. The pub has a vibrant atmosphere that welcomes everyone and offers great quality food within its three different styled dining areas.

Using the finest seasonal ingredients to create interesting, traditional and comforting dishes, the pub aims to provide an unfussy, seasonal menu.
